Thanksgiving is the perfect time to combine STEM learning with procedural writing. One of my favorite ways to do this in the classroom is with the book How to Catch a Turkey by Adam Wallace & Andy Elkerton. This story is the ideal starting point for a fun, hands-on, project-based learning activity where students plan, design, and write their own turkey traps.
This activity not only teaches procedural writing but also encourages problem-solving, creativity, and teamwork—key skills for young learners.
Step 1: Read the Story
Begin by reading How to Catch a Turkey aloud to your students. Discuss the story and ask students to think about the different strategies the characters use to catch the turkey.

Step 2: Plan Your Turkey Trap
Before students start writing, have them brainstorm ideas for their turkey trap. Ask questions like:
- What materials will you use?
- How will your trap work?
- How will you ensure it is safe for your turkey?
Encouraging discussion at this stage helps students organize their thoughts and strengthens their procedural writing.

Step 3: Build the Trap
Provide craft supplies such as:
- Pipe cleaners
- Cardboard boxes
- Popsicle sticks
- Rubber bands
Students love being hands-on and getting creative as they build their turkey traps. This step reinforces STEM concepts like design, engineering, and problem-solving.

Step 4: Write Your Procedure
Once the traps are planned and built, students write their procedural instructions. Remind them to:
- Use clear, step-by-step directions
- Include materials and tools needed
- Use sequencing words like first, next, then, finally
Writing their procedure after building ensures the steps are realistic and logical.

Step 5: Share and Test
Finally, students can share their turkey traps with the class. Discuss what worked, what didn’t, and how they could improve their design. This reflection reinforces critical thinking and helps refine their procedural writing skills.
