Teaching phonics is the key to reading success, which is why fun phonics activities for kindergarten are so important. Using hands-on games, crafts, and writing exercises gives children multiple exposures to sounds, helping them become confident readers and writers from the start.

Here are five fun phonics activities for kindergarten you can try in your classroom:

1. Phonics Headbands for Kindergarten

After teaching each sound, have students make a phonics headband instead of a coloring page. Wearing the headband all day encourages children to talk about the letter, the sound it makes, and words that start with that sound.

2. Hands-On Play Dough Phonics Activities

Play dough is perfect for reinforcing letter-sound relationships. Rolling, squishing, and shaping letters strengthens fine motor skills needed for handwriting and other classroom tasks, making learning multi-sensory and engaging.

3. Phonics Games for Kindergarten

Phonics games motivate students to practice vowel sounds, beginning sounds, blending, segmenting, and digraphs. They also develop social skills like communication and turn-taking.

4. Phonics Crafts for Kindergarten

Craft activities help students consolidate new sounds. Ideas include:

  • Cat for “C”
  • Frog for “F”
  • Bird for “B”

These crafts reinforce the letter-sound connection and add creativity to your lessons.

5. Phonics Writing Activities

Phonics and writing go hand-in-hand. I use mini whiteboard exercises and a ‘sentence a day’ writing booklet so students practice forming letters and writing sentences early.

These activities pair perfectly with my Kindergarten 5-Star Writing Display Rubric & Beginning Writing Checklist.
