Bowerbird Craft Activity for National Simultaneous Storytime 2024

Greetings, picture book and reading enthusiasts! As National Simultaneous Storytime approaches, we’re so excited to think that children across Australia will be reading Aura Parker‘s stunning book ‘Bowerbird Blues’. What better way to celebrate this literary adventure than with a delightful bowerbird-inspired craft activity?

Materials You’ll Need:

  1. Twigs
  2. Blue craft supplies
  3. Glue
  4. A bowerbird cut out
  5. Markers or coloured pencils
  6. Scissors

Instructions:

1. Collect Blue Bower Items: Begin your crafting adventure by cutting out blue bower items from craft paper or cardboard. Think of these as the treasures Blue would collect. Additionally, gather a range of blue items and small twigs to use in creating the bower nest.

2. Colour Your Bird and Bower Nest: Dive into the creative process by colouring both your bowerbird and the bower nest. Use markers or coloured pencils to bring your bird to life and add vibrant hues to your bower nest.

3. Assemble the Bower Nest: Now, it’s time to bring everything together! Assemble the bower nest by arranging the collected blue items and twigs around your bowerbird. Glue them in place to create a captivating display that mirrors the eclectic charm of Blue’s collection.

Reflect on the Book:

  • As the children work on their bowers, encourage them to talk about the story and how their creations represent Blue’s bower. Discuss the importance of collecting and appreciating unique items.

This craft activity not only allows children to engage with the story but also sparks creativity as they build their own bowerbird bowers. It’s a hands-on way to bring the book to life and encourages imagination and fine motor skills.
