Book Week costume ideas for teachers don’t need to be expensive, uncomfortable or time-consuming. In fact, with a dash of creativity and a peek into your own wardrobe, you can put together a magical look that celebrates literature and keeps your stress levels low.
Here are some fun, easy and budget-friendly costume ideas perfect for teachers celebrating Book Week 2025 and its theme, “Reading is Magic.”
The Colourful Critter (Inspired by The Very Hungry Caterpillar)
Raid your wardrobe for a green top and pants or leggings, then use colourful paper circles pinned or taped on to mimic the segments. A pair of pipe cleaner antennae on a headband finishes the look. Bonus: it’s comfy for all-day teaching!
💡 Great for lower years and Book Week parades.
What you need:
- A green top and green leggings, pants, or trackies
- Colourful paper circles (stapled, taped or safety-pinned down your front or sides)
- A headband with pipe cleaner antennae

The Wizardly Wonder (Think Harry Potter or The Worst Witch)
All you need is a dark robe (or an oversized cardigan), a wand (chopstick, pencil, or twig!) and some round glasses. Draw on a lightning bolt with eyeliner or wear a wizard hat if you have one handy.
What you need:
- A long, dark-coloured robe or dressing gown
- Round glasses
- A stick or chopstick wand
- A lightning bolt drawn on with eyeliner (or use a temporary tattoo)

The Seek-and-Find Adventurer (Where’s Wally)
Red and white stripes, blue jeans, round glasses and a beanie are all it takes. Carry a book or map, and hide in plain sight to surprise your students.
What you need:
- A red-and-white striped shirt
- Blue or black jeans or comfy pants
- Round glasses
- A beanie if you have one
🎉 Pro Tip: Challenge your class to “spot the teacher” throughout the day!

The Fancy Dresser (Inspired by Fancy Nancy)
Go glam! Frills, beads, sparkles and a tiara — anything over the top and “fancy” is perfect. Invite students to dress fancy too for a themed reading party.
What you need:
- A frilly dress, blouse, or bright outfit
- Beads, scarves, bows, ribbons—pile them on!
- A tiara or fancy hat
- Optional: Set up a mini tea party with your class
