I’m thrilled to share how the awesome book, Bev and Kev by Katrina Germein and Mandy Foot, took our classroom on a wild journey. We took a deep dive into the themes of the story: explored friendship, compared real giraffes to the story’s giraffe ‘Bev’, described characters, sequenced the story, and even learned cool giraffe facts.

Venn Diagram Fun:

  • We got stuck into a Venn diagram, comparing real giraffes to Bev and Kev’s giraffe. Kiddos brainstormed traits like height, long necks, spots, and habitats for real giraffes. Then, we explored how the story’s giraffe was similar or different. It got them thinking critically and connecting fiction with reality.

Getting to Know Bev and Kev:

  • We dug deep into Bev and Kev’s personalities, likes, dislikes, and how they interacted. The students used adjectives and descriptive language to create character profiles. It was a great way to develop comprehension, empathy, and understanding.

Sequencing

  • We embarked on a storytelling adventure by sequencing the key events from the book. Students created index cards or sticky notes with scenes and put them in order on a timeline. It helped sharpen their sequencing skills, logical thinking, and recall of the story’s plot. Plus, it sparked lively discussions about the story and students’ interpretations.

Vocabulary and Informative Writing:

  • We went beyond the story to learn amazing giraffe facts. Kiddos enjoyed a vocabulary word search, hunting for vocabulary from the story. They also delved into informative writing, researching and sharing their newfound knowledge. It expanded their vocabulary and helped consolidate their understanding.
