I have a delightful craft project that will bring the magic of “Paper Flower Girl” by Margaret Lamond to life in your classroom. This easy paper flower craft is perfect for children. It will help them explore the book’s themes of creativity, beauty and transformation and hopeful inspire some wonderful descriptive writing!
Materials You’ll Need:
- A range of bright-coloured paper or white paper for decorating
- Scissors
- Glue
- Printable heart templates (all the same size)
- A little bit of imagination and creativity!
Step-by-Step Instructions:
Step 1: Print the Paper Hearts
Start by printing a range of paper hearts, all the same size. You can use bright colors to make your flowers vibrant and eye-catching. If you prefer, print on white paper and let the kids decorate the petals themselves with markers, crayons or coloured pencils. This adds a personal touch and allows for even more creativity.
Step 2: Cut Out the Hearts
Once your hearts are printed, carefully cut them out. This step can be a fun and interactive part of the activity, where children can practice their cutting skills.
Step 3: Turn the Hearts Over
Flip all the hearts over so that the black line (if you printed templates) is not visible. This will ensure that no lines show on the finished flower, giving it a cleaner look.
Step 4: Fold Each Heart in Half
Take each heart and fold it in half vertically. This fold will give the petals a more natural, dimensional look.
Step 5: Prepare the Centre Circle
Turn the hearts back over to the side with the black line. Cut out one small centre circle. This will be the base where all the petals (hearts) will be glued.
Step 6: Glue the Petals to the Centre Circle
Apply glue to the black line side of the centre circle. Begin placing the bottom (pointed end) of each folded heart onto the centre circle. Glue half a heart at a time, reapplying glue as necessary. Ensure the hearts are evenly spaced around the circle to create a full and balanced flower.
Step 7: Reveal Your Beautiful Paper Flower
Once all the hearts are glued around the centre circle, carefully flip the flower over. You will now see a beautiful paper flower that the kids have created! Each flower will be unique and colourful, reflecting the creativity of each child.
Step 8: Write a Description of Your Flower
Have each student write a description of their flower, using vocabulary from “Paper Flower Girl” and incorporating metaphors. This exercise will help them think deeply about their flower and its connection to the book’s themes.
While making these flowers, take the opportunity to discuss the themes of “Paper-Flower Girl” with your students. Encourage the kids to share their thoughts and connect their craft to the story’s message.
