5 Picture Books To Teach Young Children About Anzac Day

Anzac Ted by Belinda Landsberry

This is my absolute favourite Anzac Day book for young learners.

Anzac Ted is the powerful, poignant story of a little boy’s teddy bear that was passed down to him from his grandfather. Battered, torn, missing an eye and an ear, he might look scary but he’s got a great story to tell. For Anzac Ted went to war, keeping soldiers company and giving them comfort. And while he never won a medal, and now doesn’t even attract a single vote at classroom Toy Shows, if only everyone looked a little deeper: ‘They’d see a hero, plain as day Who sits upon my bed. A hero, who saved me and you. His name … is Anzac Ted.’”

My Grandad Marches on Anzac Day by Catriona Hoy & Benjamin Johnson

This picture book is a fantastic introduction to ANZAC Day for small children and the honouring of soldiers who went and served in different wars for our country.  The story is told by a young girl as she awakes early to attend the dawn service where her grandfather marches each year.

Anzac Biscuits by Phil Cummings & Owen Swan

I also love this very cleverly written and illustrated story about a mother and daughter at home in Australia around the time of World War 1. They are baking Anzac biscuits for their solider dad on one page and show him fighting in the war on the other. The two alternate lives are linked by similar imagery in both – smoke from wood fire on one page and smoke in the war fields on the other etc.

Anzac Day Parade by Glenda Kane and Lisa Allen

This is a great book to introduce quite complex vocabulary to little learners.

A poignant look at war through the eyes of a former member of the 18th Battalion. Told in rhyme it takes place on Anzac Day when an old man and a young boy meet – the young boy wide-eyed and wanting to hear the glories of war and death; the old man quietly sad to remember the reality of what was faced.

Only a Donkey by Celeste Walters & Patricia Mullins

Only a Donkey is a wonderful introduction to the story of Simpson and his Donkey for young children.

“At the farm, the donkey is teased by the other animals – especially the bull! Then one night the donkey has a magical dream. The following morning, the all set out on an amazing journey.

This uplifting story of humility, courage and compassion weaves in the heroic Anzac legend of Simpson and the Donkey. Lyrically told and beautifully illustrated, it is a story that demands to be read and re-read, while the timeless themes will inspire readers of all ages.”

Celebrating Harmony Week In The Classroom

MONDAY 20 – SUNDAY 26 MARCH 2023

What is Harmony Day?

Harmony Day, which is held on the 21st of March every year, is a time to celebrate Australia’s cultural diversity and promote inclusiveness, respect and a sense of belonging with its key message being ‘Everyone Belongs’.

Celebrating Harmony Week in the Classroom

Harmony Week is a special occasion that celebrates cultural diversity and promotes inclusivity and respect for all people, regardless of their background. As a teacher, you can take this opportunity to teach your students about the importance of harmony and acceptance, while also having fun and engaging activities. Here are some different ways to celebrate Harmony Week in the clasroom:

  1. Watch cultural performances – You can show videos or invite performers to showcase different cultural performances such as music, dance, or storytelling. This can be a great way to expose your students to different art forms and appreciate the richness of cultural diversity.

3. Create a class mural or collage – Get your students to work together to create a colorful and vibrant mural or collage that represents different cultures and traditions. You can use materials such as paper, paint, or fabric to create a beautiful and meaningful display.

2. Organise a food festival – Ask your families to bring in their favourite cultural dish or snack to share with the class. You can create a mini food festival where everyone can sample different foods and learn about each other’s favourite recipes.

4. Dress up in traditional clothing or wear orange – Encourage your students to come to school dressed in traditional clothing that represents their culture or heritage. You can also organise a fashion show where students can showcase their outfits and explain the significance behind them.

5. Share cultural stories and experiences – Invite your students to share their cultural background and stories, and encourage them to ask questions and learn about each other’s traditions and customs. You can also read books or watch videos about different cultures and discuss what you learned. These are my favourite Harmony Week books:

Harmony Week provides an excellent opportunity to promote cultural understanding, appreciation and inclusivity among students.

Creating a Classroom Filled With Kindness + Bucket Filler Freebie

Creating a positive and encouraging classroom filled with kindness and respect is something we start working on from day one.  I always start the year by reading the book Have You Filled a Bucket Today? by Carol McCloud. The bucket filling concept explained in the book acts as a powerful classroom management strategy all year through. It underlines the importance and impact of our words and actions towards others and ourselves.

Have You Filled a Bucket Today? explains that everyone has an invisible bucket.  When our bucket is full, we feel great. When it’s empty, we feel terrible. We can fill our buckets by being kind to others and when others are kind to us. We can empty those buckets when we are mean or unkind. It’s a sweet and simple concept that even our littlest learners can understand.

Setting Classroom Expectations

Brainstorm positive classroom behaviours and sort the bucket filler and bucket dipper behaviours. The kiddos now understand some of your classroom expectations and the behaviours and actions they should work towards.

Bucket Filler Display

Create a central bulletin board display that helps students remember that they are bucket fillers. Make a bucket for each student using envelopes or zip lock bags. Then encourage them to write bucket filler notes to each other. Not only are they practising kindness but also working on their letter writing skills!

I also have a class bucket that I add pom poms to whenever I catch my kiddos being kind! They love working together to fill the class bucket.

Download the BUCKET FILLER FREEBIE below!

Bucket Filler Activities

I like to reinforce the bucket filler concept with different worksheets and activities throughout the year.

Bear Says Thanks Activities for Thanksgiving

I love using the book to talk to children about being grateful, giving thanks and good manners, as well as themes of friendship, sharing and gratitude. Bear Says Thanks by Karma Wilson and Jane Chapman is a classroom favorite for the month of November. The story is about a lonely bear with empty cupboards who decides to throw a feast. His generous friends arrive one by one with plenty of food to share. Bear shows his appreciation for each offering with the memorable refrain, “bear says thanks.
