The first day of school can be both exciting and overwhelming for young children. As a kindergarten teacher, I understand the importance of creating a safe and welcoming environment. One way I help ease separation anxiety is by reading Audrey Penn’s The Kissing Hand. This heartwarming story sets a comforting tone and helps students feel more secure.

To make the day extra special, I’ve created hands-on learning stations inspired by The Kissing Hand. These fun activities not only engage students but also give me a chance to assess their early skills.

Engaging First-Day Stations

1. Shape Match Station

Students match shapes like circles, squares, and triangles. This activity builds shape recognition while helping me observe their fine motor skills.

2. Counting Numbers Cut and Paste Station

Children cut out numbers and paste them in order. This activity reinforces counting skills and helps me assess number recognition.

Students practice tracing lines to improve their pencil grip and fine motor skills. This station helps me gauge their readiness for writing.

4. Number Trace and Match Station

At this station, students trace numbers and match them to quantities, which strengthens number sense and counting skills.

5. Lowercase Alphabet Trace Station

Tracing lowercase letters helps students develop letter recognition and early reading skills.

6. Uppercase Alphabet Trace Station

Similar to the previous station, this activity focuses on uppercase letter recognition and writing practice.
