Teaching Activities for Iceberg
Here are some engaging classroom activities to use alongside Iceberg by Claire Saxby:
1. Explore Word Choice and Vocabulary
This text is filled with rich descriptive vocabulary. Encourage students to explore synonyms for less common words and build their own “iceberg word bank.”
2. Five + One Senses Writing
Using the five + one senses writing technique, students can imagine what it would feel like to be in Antarctica throughout the year. This makes for a powerful descriptive writing activity.
3. Seasons and Wildlife in Antarctica
Discuss the changing seasons and the wide variety of wildlife that live on and visit the Antarctic continent during the year. Students can compare these with animals from other habitats.
4. Antarctic Research and Information Reports
Have students research Antarctica, its climate, and its unique wildlife. They can then write their own information report to present their findings.
5. Diorama Project – Build an Iceberg Environment
Create a hands-on project by building an iceberg and its surrounding environment as a diorama. This is a fantastic cross-curricular activity linking literacy, geography, and art.
