Spiro by Anna McGregor is one of my absolute favourites from the 2025 CBCA Book Week shortlist—and it’s the perfect book to spark a fun craft activity in your classroom!

This beautifully illustrated story follows Spiro, a little spider on a mission to spin the perfect web. As students follow Spiro’s journey of trial and error, they’re introduced to themes like perseverance, creativity, and resilience. That’s what makes Spiro such a valuable classroom text—not just for Book Week, but all year round.

Why use Spiro in the classroom?
Spiro is a brilliant book for introducing and reinforcing growth mindset, perseverance, and creative problem-solving. It’s perfect for discussions about making mistakes, trying again, and finding joy in the process—not just the outcome. It’s a wonderful text for social-emotional learning and can easily be tied to writing, art, and even science (hello, spiders and webs!).

Here’s how to make your Spiro Spider:

Step-by-step Instructions:

Step 1:
Colour and cut out all your spider parts – the eyes, body, and legs.

Step 2:
Lay out your pieces, ready for assembly.

Step 3:
Start folding the legs accordion-style to give them a 3D wobble.

Step 4:
Repeat the folds with all eight legs.

Step 5:
Prepare your web page—this is where your spider will sit. Add a sentence or two about perseverance underneath the web.

Step 6:
Glue the spider parts together and attach Spiro to the web. Don’t forget to add your thoughts about what perseverance means!

It’s a great way to tie in fine motor skills, listening, and a bit of character education too.
