Halloween is the perfect time to spark creativity in your students, and one of the best ways to do that is through engaging, spooky writing activities. One of my all-time favorite Halloween projects comes from an experience at a school I used to teach at, where a local real estate company played a big role in inspiring student writing. Every year, the school held a Halloween fete, and one of the sponsors—a local real estate agency—put up Haunted House For Sale signs around the school grounds. These signs were not your typical property ads; they were filled with imaginative, eerie descriptions of haunted mansions, creepy basements, and ghostly inhabitants.
A Perfect Halloween Writing Opportunity
The kids absolutely loved these signs! They sparked so much interest that I turned the concept into a creative writing activity. The students would start by designing their own haunted houses—imagining every little spooky detail from the broken windows to the creaky doors. Then, they had to write a description that not only painted a vivid picture of the haunted house but also persuaded potential “buyers” to come check out these eerie dwellings.
This project was a hit because it combined creativity with essential writing skills. Students learned how to describe settings in a detailed way while also practicing persuasive writing techniques. Even the most reluctant writers got excited about designing their haunted houses and coming up with their own spine-chilling descriptions!
