The beginning of the school year is one of my favorite times — fresh starts, new students, and endless possibilities. One of my favorite ways to capture this special moment is with a back-to-school time capsule activity.
Instead of a traditional All About Me worksheet, this back-to-school time capsule activity helps students reflect on who they are right now, set meaningful goals, and dream about their future selves. It’s a powerful and memorable way to start the school year and build classroom community.

Why I Love This Back-to-School Time Capsule Activity
At the end of the school year — or whenever you choose to open the time capsules — students absolutely love reading what they wrote months earlier. The joy on their faces when they see their goals, their reflections, and how much they’ve grown is priceless.
This activity is a great alternative to an All About Me activity, because it encourages deeper thinking. Students go beyond listing their favorite things — they reflect on who they want to become, what they hope to achieve, and how they want to feel proud of themselves at the end of the year.

One of my favorite parts of this back-to-school time capsule activity is sealing the capsules and keeping them safe all year. When we finally open them, it sparks amazing conversations and helps students recognize their growth and achievements.

If you’re looking for a first week of school activity that’s fun, meaningful, and memorable, I highly recommend trying this student time capsule. It’s easy to prepare, differentiated to suit different learners, and something your students will remember for years to come!
